How to Avoid Holiday Delays

Earlier this month, Brie posted a very helpful article about booking plane tickets. I thought I would follow up with advice from a New York Times article about avoiding holiday delays.

The article offers four suggestions:

Check Flight-Status Alerts - a lot of airlines and websites offer this service. It is used to inform you if there are any changes in your itinerary.
Cut Down on Wait Times - check the TSA’s website for wait times (did you know you could do that?). The website is: http://waittime.tsa.dhs.gov/index.html.
Check in as Early as You Can - Get there early or do it online.
Know Your Rights - this is what the Times reported:

The Department of Transportation requires airlines to pay passengers who are involuntarily bumped from a domestic flight a maximum of $400 in cash if they reach their destination …

Top Tips for Booking Holiday Flights

Yes, that’s the creepiest picture I could find to depict “holiday travel.”  You’re welcome.  Going home for the holidays, or maybe a ski trip out west?  Here are some tips for booking flights this holiday season, courtesy of MSNBC.com.

You will pay more this year.  Farecast.com predicts that holiday flights are 30% more expensive this year than last.
Don’t hold out for last-minute deals. 
Being flexible with your dates will help a LOT.  Case in point- I’m going to Italy over the holidays this year.  Instead of leaving a few days before or after Christmas like everyone else in the universe, I’m leaving on Christmas day and saving myself about $200 in the process.  And that’s $200 worth of cute handbags I can pick up in Italia!
Try other airports, like if you’re in Boston, try flying out of Rhode Island or New Hampshire.
